The Sauerländ region in Germany has an extensive tradition of roof and facade building with shieffer (slate stone) that has been mined in the area for centuries. Even if this vernacular method of cladding is largely in decline, there are still artisan builders and companies that continue the craft, as the system is as aesthetic as it is functional. Slate is a high-quality material: it is weather-resistant, very durable, requires little maintenance and is ecologically valuable due to its environmentally friendly extraction and good recyclability. This project consisted in working with Müllenhoff Dachdeckerei in Korbach, Sauerländ, to learn the uses and construction methodology of slate roofs and facades.
